Public computer access?

Author Message Pete Kosel Posted on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 - 2:45 pm:        What is the feasibility of setting up computers in schools, churches or businesses for folks to use? Are there any plausible sites now that McGregor is unavailable? I know this may sound like a dumb question, but I live in California these days. Back in 97 I donated some computers to McGregor and it irritates me that McGregor is apparently now closed. Pete Kosel Posted on Thursday, October 14, 2004 - 5:36 pm:        I view the problem of McGregor and the problem of providing public computer access in Highland Park as separate (for the time being). My understanding is that McGregor is closed. A sad fact, but a fact. Other sites must be considered until McGregor is re-opened. Alternative sites might include schools, churches, or businesses (like Starbucks and similar outfits - businesses can attract traffic by providing computer access or a wireless "hotspot"). There's a chance a private home might be suitable if the resident was civically active in PTA or Boy Scouts or a similar activity and cooperative, but it would be a strain on most homes. The requirements for any site would reasonably include provision of shelter, electricity, security and supervision, public or semi-public access, etc. I think a first step in a feasibility study would be to develop a list of churches, schools, and civic groups which might provide space and other requirements. I'll start something like that later today if I get a chance and post results/links here (bear in mind I'm 2000+ miles away, so I rely on the web for info). All seem to have some sort of computer/internet activity currently, except possibly Barber Focus School (I can't be sure, they might just have forgotten to mention it).
