The United Rhode Island Block Club will meet Saturday, July 17th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 79 Rhode Island Avenue (Northwest corner of John R). The agenda will discuss events going on in Highland Park and it's proposed goal: to have eacn and every resident of Rhode Island Avenue registered and voting in the November presidential election. Suggested activities to achieve this goal are welcome from anyone. In fact, it would make a GOOD topic for discussion because every block club should probably adopt this as their goal.

We are very concerned that whomever was keeping the bushes trimmed at McGregor Library has stopped. The library looks TERRIBLE! And that is unfortunate because the library grounds are seen by all the suburbanites who drive to downtown from the subburbs. It suggests Highland Parkers don't care about themselves: they won't even keep the property they own, neat and clean. Same for the Municipal Building however, most passers-by probably don't know that is Highland Park's city hall but they do know about the library. The unkempt state of the bushes has a depressing effect on Highland Park citizens. "We can't even take care of the one and probably ONLY beautiful city building that we own." That building SPEAKS to suburbanites and its own residents of the spirit, the health of Highland Park. We are ILL, VERY ILL, perhaps dying - or, already DEAD! The library bushes tell the story.

It's a tremendous job to get out there and take care of those bushess but - maybe Rhode Island and Massachuetts will have to get together and do it. WHAT HAPPENED? is our quetion. Whomever knows, we would appreciate an answer in time for this Saturday meeting.

Rhode Island is glad to know that there WILL BE a "Candidates Night". It is being held at Berea St. Paul Church at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22. It is being sponsored by the United Block Clubs of Highland Park. Thanks to them, our block clus won't have to TRY and invite all the candidates to our Saturday meeting and duplicate efforts. Good for United Block Clubs of Highland Park! We also need to commend them in getting their Highland Park Information Hot Line up and running. Now I can find out all the meetings going on in the city by just dialing 438-0130. United Rhode Island Block Club THANKS United Block Clubs of Highland Park and Steering Committee members Emma Fogle, Loretta Young and Albert Bowman for these two accomplishments.

At our meeting yesterday, we decided on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. for the clean-up. Representatives from the McLean and California block clubs were there and they shared the same concerns and had decided to hold a clean up also. SO - we are coordinating our efforts. Judge Officer was at the meeting and will send a work-crew from the court. We will have plenty of workers.
Please join us. It will be FUN!!
We need equipment like garbage bags and gloves and MASKS (because the bushes on the Rhode Island side are something like dandilions when they turn into white fluffy stuff - they fly into your nose when you cut them. Electrical bush cutters won't work - no place to pluge in. If you have any that are gas? run - do bring them. Mostly - we will just use the tools we have and the people community-serivice from the court won't have any equipment. We will need some bottled water and maybe a snack bar to nourish the court folks but - not real food because - with all of us working, we'll be done before noon.

The Library clean up went real well, and it was good to see the citizens who cared, and not just back waiting,or talking just to be talking. To me it was a honor to be apart of the cleanup. Our Honorable Mayor was there busy as a bee,and so was our own 30th district judge, the honorable Judge Brigette Officer. Also I was please to meet a friend that I met here on HPFOLKS five months ago who lives in a small northern Macomb county community Richmond Michigan,Darwin Parks & Son. They took the time to drive from 32 mile road down to the library to help clean it up. Thanks Darwin on behalf of our Highland Park citizens. As for myself I do look forward to being where ever I am needed to help my City.Dr Jane Robinson,It was a honor to have met you also, and keep the faith. Thanks William AkbarX
