I took my son to the playground at Buena Vista today and the sight was enough to break your heart. Only a few weeks after the playground had been spruced up, the vandals were at work (See pictures). A child told me that the tree - freshly planted, now ripped out of the ground - was vandalized by young men minutes before I reached the playground. Vodka bottles, feces, grabage, spray paint. Kids deserve better than this.

Has anyone any suggestion as to how we can stop this from happening?

Great idea, Lona - perhaps we can create a rough schedule?
I'll pick - until further notice - Tuesdays from 11:00am to noon'ish. I'll also really pay attention from now on when I drive or walk by.

Any other volunteers?

I don't know if this idea is too far off base.
What about installing a small camera in the area (real or fake)?

Hi Tracie,
I've been researching wireless webcams. They cost around $275.00
Alternatively, we could place a regular webcam on the school roof if we could run it to an online school computer.
Two questions come to mind; where do we get the money and does anyone know anyone at the school who could put out feelers?
I was actually thinking of monitoring my alley with one.

I went by the playground today. Some folks have been there and pretty much put everything back together. I'm impressed! Who was that masked man?

From now in, I'm going to slow down whenever I go by the playground. If I see anything untoward, I've placed the police mini-station on my cell:

Hi Stephen,
I am willing to donate and I think others will be willing to do the same. There are a lot of citizens who are really concerned about the playground. I know the principal, her name is Loretta Dixon. I can contact her if you like.
I am not sure who cleaned up the area but I think it may be volunteers from Revival Tabernacle. The Paster's name is Paster Tim (first name). I attended his church on July 27 and he mentioned something called WAR week and part of WAR week was to clean up the city. I was really impressed by his church, it was very diverse.

Hi Tracie,
Folks like pastor Tim make me feel there is hope for Highland Park. Is there some way I can contact Tim and Loretta Dixon? I'd like to sound them out concerning the webcam idea. If you have such info, can you email me how to contact Tim & Loretta at admin@hpfoks.com ?
I gather the WC Sheriff's Dept will also consider cameras if the issue merits it.

Angelo Flemings of MOVE (Manchester-Oakland-Victor Enterprises) has talked with me about making electronic surveylance services available. You may want to call him about this: 313-883-4945. or aflemings@dessinc.com

I have just been informed by Wayne County Sheriff Don Cox that the playground will come under closer scrutiny.
Don Cox writes,
"...I passed on the information to Pat - for SOP action and James Buford to place patrols on alert..."

this attempt to renew a playground is very thoughtful. I believe that the city of highland park really needs some renovating. So keep up with the fight to keep this city looking nice and orderly. I hope this works out and I am looking forward to taking my 19 children to the playground. They will be delighted to know that the city board cares about the children and their well being and fun. Thankyou and have a niceday
