Highland Park made the evening news in a good way... much needed trash removal!

Rescue 4 Helps Neighborhood Take Out Trash

DETROIT -- Abandoned homes are more than an eyesore. Often there is a corresponding trash pile outside the house that can pose a safety hazard... The two-flat on Elmhurst Street caught fire this winter, and not only is there no working fire hydrant, but neighbors said they complained to Highland Park for at least six months.... Rescue 4 contacted 1-800-GOT-JUNK, a junk removal service, which volunteered to remove the trash from the neighborhood.

Well Well Highland Park citizens should realize that they was blessed with brains, and if one try don't get it there's always another try or way to do things, and get things done.Rescue4? I wonder what's the catch behind channel 4 being involved in Highland Park? I can't help but wondering why these people on elmhurst don't pool their money together to hold their own clean-up.The only requirement to host a clean up is to organize the clean-up crew, call Steve Williams of the Highland Park dept of Publicworks, and I am sure the Brother would use the City's big loader to scoop up the trash, and the really thing that would be needed would be a 25 or 30 feet dumpster. Not to be critical towards your post urbanator, but it shows how people wait or depend on others when they can do things themselves.Opps maybe you talking about Elmhurst across the freeway on Detroit side huh.So once again the news headline should have been Blacks depend on a helping hand.

I posted in a different thread my choice to haul debris to the Governors street... may not be enough pick-ups in Hazel Park to do the job though.

I agree people shouldn't wait for the evening news before organizing their own street. Think HP would deduct the refuse collection tax from water bills

urbanator!!! shame on you wanting to haul trash to Lansing, and dump it on the honorable govenor's street. You know just like I know Hazel Park,Ferndale, and Oak Park don't play that dumping bs.If one is caught littering in either one of them communities I just names you know what the consequences are in a Oakland county community. That's why people from the outside of Highland Park have made anywhere in Highland Park a dumpsite, and even Highland Parkers is dumping also. The dumping game starts anywhere during the early morning hours when most people are sleep, and the sheriff patrol is keeping Woodward safe.Deduct the refuse taxes from the water bills? Hahahaha that's funny because a move like that would take responsibility.Since you are a outside and seem to be concerned about our community, the City of Highland Park might accept a big donation from you.Just drop it off at the clerk's office in city hall, and you might get a street,a building,or a park named in your honor. :-)

Mr. Black Power.

Shame on me? (Hangs head) Is someone else responsible for stopping the trashing of Highland Park...maybe a bit closer than Lansing:-)

Last fall residents observed a semi-driver dumping piles of construction debris at the se corner of woodward throughout the morning. Property owner was called, had not ordered garbage... driver came back one to many times and was boxed in by Detroiters cars until cops came... HUGE ticket.

Looks like Block Clubs have done as you suggested and wonder if people are just worn down.

I can't afford to buy Urbanator Alley... saving my money to buy gas for the pick-up truck protest!

You know what Urbanator I am starting to find you very very interesting.Construction debris at the Southeast cornor of Woodward & what street? Blocked in by Detroiters cars? did this happen in Detroit? if so what does it have to do with Highland Park? Please tell me about it a little more clearer.Apparently the block clubs did not do something right. Maybe one day you will let me use your van or your pickup truck to ride around the city just to look, and not do anything about it.Or maybe I can come to your office and we can create a concept to get more funds to help you operate.

3:35am... ;{ woodward and eight... the empty space by the electrical contractor.. guy was on his way to a legal dump, saw empty land and figured he could get away with it.

It's a funny story because he was glad to see the cops... there was no block club, just lots of area residents who keep strange hours and managed to catch a dumper in the act.

What would be the purpose of driving around and doing nothing? There are excellent block clubs in place, this forum is set up to coordinate... pick a date, make a to-do and supply list.. trash bags, gloves ...request Wayne County "volunteers" and roll offs...

Highland Park residents don't need my help to set this up... it's a start.

Urbanator. WilliamX seem to always find a seat near the front or in the front at Council meetings, while Highland Parker and myself sits in the back so we can notice our surrounding.Come join the citizens, and whenever the chace presents its self introduce your real self, and I think its a wise thing not to post your real name at no time online anywhere.

Are we on the right foot now?

I've figured out Citizens don't come to council when they are happy about things, but I'm looking forward shaking hands... June 21st.

I'll wear a red carnation!

Okay cool there will be plenty us wearing our uniforms (not police uniforms) or our red, black, and green colors.Citizens don't come to council meetings until shit hits their front door, and then they will jam the Council Chamber with SRO.Look at the mountains of garbage on the curb in front of most citizens properties,or either in vacant lots near their property.I know for a fact that some citizens who have complained about trash dumping, have organized a neighborhood Midnight watch, where citizens volunteer taking turns throughout the night watching the alleys and streets from their living room or backroom windows. Now that's what I call citizens being involved to make the differences. So you are a female Urbanator? ummm very interesting.

Is there an agenda available prior to the council meeting?

"Miserable and disreputable housing conditions may do more than spread disease and crime and immorality. They may also suffocate the spirit by reducing the people who live there to the status of cattle. They may indeed make living an almost insufferable burden. They may also be an ugly sore, a blight on the community which robs it of charm, [348 U.S. 26, 33] which makes it a place from which men turn. The misery of housing may despoil a community as an open sewer may ruin a river."

http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getcase.pl?n avby=volpage&court=us&vol=348&page=36

Citizens have been taking on many duties they pay taxes for... Anonymous, you are correct... talk is cheap, but approaching the new administrator 1st ... get him to acknowledge the problem, offer solution(s) and timetable for resolution... THEN if he fails to deliver I'm more than happy to fall back on pick-up truck special delivery to his front yard!

Urbanator is as happily married as one can be... last 4 days have been "honey DO" hell.

Urbanator, You remind me so much of the so-called Senator of Highland Park. She is always up in the White Media's face. The Detroit News do not give a damn about if a citizen can afford housing or not all they are concerned about is how many white developers is interesting in taking Highland Park over. That Singer guy from the Detroit News is a pain, and so is a few other reporters, including the local publisher who have nothing but whites writing in her so-called black community paper. However I will say thanks for the rich blacks who will take you up on this article.

Mr. WilliamX, why do I get the impression being compared to Sen. Scott isn't a compliment?

This is the 3rd post where you've really been down on "white" media, developers and, well, suffering from a case of the glass is 1/2 empty... the Detroit News don't have to care and can't "report" something unless they know about it.

Ok, as the "official" Woodward Heritage publication, The Legacy is not a "black community paper" even though the majority of the articles are about Highland Park or from her elected officials... what issues would you like to see covered?

Household trash, yard waste, old tires and construction debris are just a sampling of the items dumped illegally in Inkster.

The blatant dumping has led city officials to add technology to the fight -- a hidden camera. And they warn that if you are caught dumping in Inkster, you could face prosecution.

Your Point Urbanator? I have a question for you,why people people always compare what is taking place in one city with another city? Inkster is in the same rut as Highland Park. Believe me for over 10 years people are always coming to Highland Park talking about what is happening in other cities, and really do not understand what kind of financial help that city is getting, and where the money is coming from, and that's Highland Park's problem they have borrowed money from everywhere, and still owe money everywhere.Urbanator are you white? The reason why I asked that is because most whites do not understand the real hardship that Highland Park is having, and your white media_the Detroit News or the Free Press is forever gethering so-called information from outsiders, and then they print that venom, and whites and wannabe whites chew the newpaper up by reading and believing the BS.

Whites understand. They just don't care. They built Highland Park, had it stolen from them by rude and racist blacks and now they're watching blacks destroy it. The same for Detroit. Whites find it entertaining, sort of like watching a tragic play.

My point is simply to see how other communities resolve similar issues... Inkster obtained a grant for the trash-cam... maybe Highland Park could obtain a similar grant.

It's important to know what's being said about you (Highland Park) in the media and you are correct... it would seem "outsiders" are providing the information... which is why most people have no idea what's really happening in Highland Park.

I do understand the financial hardship facing Highland Park and her residents...

Here's another example... once you get over the fact Rochester residents are trying to save a "grain elevator"... there is some useful information.

They are asking for a "few hundred thousand dollars" to move the building and (donated) land to move to... they have a Historical Society that is actively seeking funds amd provided their contact information along with a request for help.

Library... donated roof and building repairs.... materials and labor? Get the Carpenters, Electrical, Mechanical and other trade Unions to make this classroom training.

Seriously, if people can get misty eyed over a grain elevator...

http://www.detnews.com/2005/oakland/0506/17/D04-21 8319.htm

"That is really one of the most historical buildings in the community," he said. "Once that building's gone, there's very little left to remind us that we were an agricultural community."

http://abclocal.go.com/wjrt/news/062005_NW_da_dump ing.html

A woman who lives on Flint's north side saw illegal dumping happening next door to her home, called the city and hours later walked away with a fistful of cash.

It's nothing new in Flint -- in fact it's a chronic problem in the city -- especially in the yards of abandoned or vacant homes.

The Flint Police Department dumping hotline is (810) 237-2432. Police say they investigate them all and if your information leads to a conviction, you could get up to $250.
